From Trainee to Leader: My MDS Journey
By Emily Brooks (Group 54)
Reflecting on my journey, the MDS Graduate programme has been a transformative experience, both professionally and personally. The person who joined MDS isn’t the same person finishing it now. I started the programme with enthusiasm and curiosity, but limited industry experience, little confidence in my leadership abilities, and only a basic understanding of the wide range of roles in the food, agriculture, and horticulture sectors. I approached challenges with uncertainty, still figuring out where I could make the most impact. Now, I tackle complex situations with more confidence, lead with clarity, and trust my ability to deliver results.
Through each placement, I was pushed beyond my comfort zone, encouraged to adapt, and given ownership of challenging projects. These experiences have shaped me into a more resilient and capable professional. I’ve developed a clearer sense of my strengths, a better understanding of the industry, and the confidence to lead effectively.

One of the proudest moments of my journey was receiving the MDS Rising Star Award, recognising the growth, impact, and commitment I’ve shown throughout the programme. It was a meaningful affirmation of how far I’ve come, both in mindset and leadership ability.
As a Management Trainee, I had the opportunity to work across diverse roles and businesses in four countries: The Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, England, and The Netherlands. This international exposure broadened my industry knowledge and helped me develop cultural awareness and adaptability. Each placement challenged me in new ways and gave me a range of skills I wouldn’t have gained elsewhere in such a short time.
Starting Out
I began my MDS journey at Global Pacific Food Group in The Republic of Ireland, working as a Product Manager supplying Aldi. This fast-paced role helped me build a strong foundation in commercial operations, customer management, and retail supply chains. I quickly gained experience managing product lifecycles, responding to changing customer demands, and collaborating with suppliers, all while growing my confidence in decision-making and communication.
International Experience
Next, I spent a year at Syngenta’s global headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. Working as a Large Farms Account Manager in a multinational organisation was a completely different experience. I got exposure to strategic-level thinking, global operations, and cross-functional collaboration on a much bigger scale. Living and working abroad also helped me become more culturally aware and adaptable – skills that have been invaluable in my later placements and will continue to help me throughout my career.

Leadership in Action
At Myton Horticulture, I took on a leadership and change management project, giving me practical experience leading teams through a complex change. I centralised commercial administration from Myton Horticulture Holland to the UK, streamlining processes and improving operational efficiency. This led to a new structure that better supported the team and aligned with business goals. The project challenged me to think strategically, manage change sensitively, and communicate effectively across cultures and departments.
One of the most valuable aspects of MDS is the network. The community of Trainees, alumni, and mentors creates a collaborative environment where we support and learn from each other. Whether it’s preparing for presentations, navigating new challenges, or celebrating successes, there’s always someone willing to help.
Throughout my placements, the MDS programme has supported my development through its leadership and management apprenticeship. I’ve gained skills in finance, project management, operational leadership, and change implementation. The structured learning, combined with real-world experience, has accelerated my growth and helped me build confidence in my ability to lead and create value.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, I feel ready to take on future leadership roles in the industry. MDS has given me the tools, exposure, and confidence to thrive in a sector that’s constantly evolving. It’s great to look back at the progress I’ve made, and I’m excited about the next step in my journey – returning as an Account Manager to the business where I started, Global Pacific Food Group.
For anyone considering MDS, I’d say it’s more than a graduate scheme; it’s a launchpad for future leaders in food, agriculture, and fresh produce. It’s a journey that challenges you, grows you, and sets you up to make a real difference.
