Annual Conference: Top Tips for Trainees

The MDS Annual Conference is coming up on 15-17th June, and we’re looking forward to welcoming Trainees, Members, and industry professionals for an exciting few days of networking, insight, and celebration.

Held at Eastwood Hall near Nottingham, this in-person event brings together the MDS community to reflect on the past year, celebrate success, and explore the evolving future of the food and fresh produce industry. This year’s theme – ‘The Future of Food’ – will shape discussions on innovation, sustainability, and the changing landscape of the sector.

While the full event runs across three days, Monday 16th June is the main conference day, featuring a packed programme of industry speakers, a formal lunch, an awards ceremony, and a networking session. The surrounding days – Saturday 15th and Tuesday 17th June – will be dedicated to Trainee training and development, offering further learning and reflection as part of the MDS journey.

Whether you’re new to MDS or already established within the programme, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get involved, raise your profile, and take full advantage of what the network has to offer.

Top Tips for the Annual Conference

To help you make the most of the Annual Conference, we’ve compiled some top tips below:

Do Your Homework

Spend a little time ahead of the event learning about the Members attending, the speakers (TBA – keep an eye on our socials!), and the day’s agenda. This preparation can boost your confidence and help you start more meaningful conversations.

Dress Professionally

Business wear is the expected dress code – so think smart, polished, and professional. A sharp outfit sets the tone and shows you’re ready to represent yourself and MDS at your best.

Be Ready to Network

The Annual Conference brings together a broad cross-section of the industry. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, and talk about your experiences. You never know where a conversation might lead!

Use Your Voice

Take part in Q&A sessions, discussions, and workshops. Your input as a Trainee is valuable – Members want to hear your perspective, and speaking up helps you build confidence too.

Take Notes

There’s a lot to take in over the course of the conference. Bring a notebook to jot down key takeaways, contact names, and action points to reflect on afterwards.

Be Present

Make the most of being there in person. Keep your phone tucked away and fully engage in the day – the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.

Follow Up

After the event, connect with the people you met – whether on LinkedIn or by email. A short message of thanks or a follow-up question is a simple but powerful way to leave a lasting impression.

There’s no need for Trainees to register for the Annual Conference – your place is already confirmed. Simply arrive ready to take part, learn, and represent yourself and MDS professionally across all three days. We can’t wait to meet you at the conference – come prepared to connect, share, and grow!
