Elsoms Seeds Joins MDS to Cultivate the Next Generation of Agricultural Leaders

MDS is thrilled to welcome Elsoms Seeds, the UK’s leading independent seed specialist and plant breeder, to our network of Members dedicated to shaping the future of the food and fresh produce industry.

As a not-for-profit organisation, MDS has been developing leadership talent for the agri-food sector since 1986. Our unique model combines hands-on secondments in Member businesses with high-quality leadership and management training, accredited by the Chartered Management Institute. Each placement offers Trainees the opportunity to contribute meaningful work while building the skills and confidence to become future industry leaders.

A Shared Commitment to Talent Development

By joining MDS, Elsoms demonstrates a clear commitment to succession planning and talent development. This partnership not only supports the growth of the business but also contributes to the wider sustainability and resilience of the UK’s agricultural industry.

“We’re delighted to welcome Elsoms Seeds to the MDS network. As a company at the forefront of seed innovation and plant breeding, Elsoms brings a wealth of expertise and opportunity to our programme. Their commitment to nurturing talent and investing in future leaders mirrors our own values, and we’re excited to see the impact this partnership will have – not only for our Trainees, but for the wider industry.”

Opening the Door to New Opportunities

Elsoms’ first MDS Trainee, Edward Mayell, has recently started his secondment with the company. Ed will gain first-hand experience within a pioneering business known for its cutting-edge research and seed technology, while bringing new ideas, energy and insight to the team.

“I’m excited to be joining Elsoms Seeds as part of the next step on my MDS journey. I have no doubt it will provide me with a fantastic opportunity to build on my experience so far and learn from a business at the forefront of innovation in the seed industry – a part of the agricultural sector I’m yet to explore. I’m looking forward to contributing to the team and developing plenty of new skills along the way.”

Addressing an Ageing Workforce

The importance of nurturing young talent in agriculture has never been greater. According to data from Defra, only 5% of principal farmers in England are under 35, while 68% are aged 55 or over. This ageing workforce presents a serious challenge to the long-term resilience of the sector. By developing ambitious young professionals and placing them with innovative businesses like Elsoms, MDS is helping to secure a strong future for UK agriculture.

Looking Ahead

We look forward to seeing the impact of this collaboration unfold – for our Trainees, for Members, and for the industry as a whole. Together, we can continue to create opportunities for the next generation of leaders, and support our Members in building future-ready teams.
