The Future of Apprenticeships: Exploring the Benefits of Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agencies
The UK apprenticeship landscape has been evolving to meet the needs of industries and individuals alike. One of the key developments in this space is the growth of Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agencies (FJAAs). These agencies offer a flexible approach to apprenticeships by allowing individuals to gain experience across multiple employers within the same sector while completing their programme.
Last week, we had the opportunity to attend a round table discussion hosted by the FDM Group, focusing on FJAAs Delivery Models. The event started with a welcome message from Andy Brown, Group Chief Commercial Officer at FDM, followed by a presentation from John Myers, Apprenticeships Policy & Funding at the Department for Education (DfE), who shared insights on the future direction of FJAAs. We then heard from different agencies about their delivery models: Abbé Charlesworth from FDM, Julie Deeley from BESAS, and our own CEO, Saffy Waterson, who talked about the MDS’ development scheme.
Developing Diverse Talent
At MDS, we take pride in being a leading FJAA, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality opportunities in the food and fresh produce industry. Our programme places trainees with multiple businesses across the sector, allowing them to develop a broad range of skills across different roles. Trainees get hands-on experience whilst working towards a Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification, accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.
Our model benefits both trainees and members: trainees gain diverse experience and develop adaptable skills, while members access skilled professionals ready to meet their needs. By bridging the gap between industry demands and apprenticeship opportunities, we help both parties thrive. Our programme, which recruits based on potential rather than qualifications, opens doors for motivated individuals from all backgrounds, fostering workplace diversity and supporting social mobility.
Benefits and Solutions for Companies
MDS offers significant benefits to our members (based across the U.K., Europe and even further afield), providing high-calibre candidates with a strong mix of technical and commercial skills. By partnering with over 60 companies, we foster collaboration and offer our members an opportunity to meet specific business needs, helping them enhance their leadership pipeline and attract motivated talent
A major advantage of flexi-job apprenticeships is in the name; the flexible nature of the programme allows businesses to utilise skilled trainees for as little as six months. This is particularly beneficial for industries such as food and fresh produce, where short-term projects and seasonal roles are common. This model addresses skill shortages without the commitment of a traditional multi-year-long apprenticeship. With flexible contracts and access to training and career development resources, our trainees are well-prepared to deliver real value to our members.
Additionally, MDS provides cost savings for members, with an average saving of around £5,500 over 12 months through a flat-rate model that eliminates extra expenses like NI and pension contributions, recruitment and training costs. Members can also utilise secondments to manage seasonal peaks, special projects, or evaluate trainees for permanent roles, all without added recruitment costs.
Building a Brighter Future for All
In summary, FJAAs provide businesses with a flexible solution to address skill shortages and meet temporary workforce needs, while also supporting social mobility and offering apprentices the chance to build a diverse skill set across industries. MDS is deeply committed to our work with flexi-job apprenticeships, and we are thrilled to see this initiative expanding across the industry.
