National Apprenticeship Week: Inspiring Stories from MDS Trainees

National Apprenticeship Week: Inspiring Stories from MDS Trainees

National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the opportunities and life-changing experiences that apprenticeships offer to individuals across the UK. Apprenticeships provide a unique pathway to success, combining hands-on experience with academic learning, while earning a qualification and a wage. They are an ideal choice for those seeking to kickstart their careers, gain practical skills, and build confidence in a supportive, real-world environment.

At MDS, we specialise in offering a flexible apprenticeship programme that empowers Trainees to unlock their potential. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a fresh direction, joining our scheme could be the perfect way to take control of your future. This blog celebrates National Apprenticeship Week by showcasing the journeys of some of our current Trainees and demonstrating how apprenticeships can help you kick-start your career.

Meet Anne: Customer Supply Planner at Double H Nurseries

What is your education/career background prior to MDS?

I studied Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University, graduating in 2022. At the time, I didn’t have a clear career path in mind, so I decided to take a couple of years to reflect on what I wanted to do. I spent one year in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, working in various cafes while exploring the country. The following year, I returned home and worked at a local restaurant, gaining valuable experience and taking time to figure out my next steps, before joining MDS in 2024.

What are your future goals, and how has this apprenticeship helped you work towards them?

I’m still not 100% sure of my goals for after completing the MDS scheme. While I know I want to work in the agricultural or horticultural industry, I’m still exploring which specific area I’d like to focus on. This is exactly why I chose the MDS scheme – it’s the perfect fit for me. It offers the opportunity to gain invaluable experience by exploring different roles within the industry. Additionally, the chance to earn a Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification is a significant bonus. From my time working in the industry so far, I’ve already seen how highly regarded this qualification is and how beneficial it will be for my career once I finish the MDS programme.

How has the flexible model helped you balance work, studies, and personal life?

The flexible model has worked perfectly for me. With the MDS scheme, we relocate to a completely new part of the country, which requires adjusting to a new environment. This can be challenging, but joining a couple of local clubs has been incredibly helpful. It’s given me the opportunity to meet people my age who share similar interests. The apprenticeship has been fantastic as well, especially with the ample notice we receive about upcoming training days and assignments. This has allowed me to plan ahead, ensuring I meet deadlines while still staying active in the clubs I’ve joined.

What is your education/career background prior to MDS?

I completed an A Level in Business Studies and a BTEC National Diploma in Sport at The Regis School in Bognor Regis. I joined MDS in September 2024 under their new school leaver apprenticeship programme and I’m currently working with the engineering team at Tangmere in their packhouse.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over other career or education paths?

I had reached a point where I had enough of formal study and did not want to continue in traditional education. Instead, I was keen to start earning some money and gain hands-on experience. The careers officer at my sixth form introduced me to the West Sussex Growers Association, who were promoting a new local apprenticeship programme in horticulture. It felt like a great opportunity to explore a variety of different tasks while combining my enthusiasm for business with outdoor and hands-on activities.

What projects or tasks have you been working on during your apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship, I have been working on various projects and tasks. At the beginning of the season, I was involved in replanting in the glasshouses to ensure the plants have a healthy start. Additionally, I assisted the maintenance team in dismantling end-of-life machines in the packhouse, learning valuable skills in equipment maintenance and operations.

Meet Katie: Commercial Executive at Vitacress

What is your education/career background prior to MDS?

Before joining MDS in April 2024, I studied Geography at the University of Bristol. During my three-year degree, I developed a keen interest in sustainable crop production and food systems.

What’s been your favourite part of the apprenticeship scheme so far?

My favourite part of the apprenticeship scheme so far has been all the opportunities to learn from the instructors online and in-person. Learning from knowledgeable instructors about various aspects of management and people skills. The opportunity to engage in discussions with my MDS peers – where we can relate these lessons to our real work experiences—has been incredibly valuable.

What advice would you give to someone considering a flexible apprenticeship?

 – Time Management: Stay organised by setting clear priorities and creating a schedule that balances work and study.

 – Integrate Your Experiences: Make the most of each role by linking your on-the-job learning with the apprenticeship assignments. This not only reinforces the learning but also adds value to the work.

 – Stay Curious & Network: Engage with mentors and colleagues, ask questions, and seek feedback. Building a network during each role can open new opportunities and provide ongoing support.

Meet Calum: Customer Insights Trainee at Syngenta

What is your education/career background prior to MDS?

I studied Film and Media at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, and at the same time I held part-time employment at a major food retailer, where I progressed into a supervisory role. It was this part-time role more than anything that inspired me to pursue a career in fresh food, produce, and agriculture; I gained a further appreciation for how absolutely essential every part of this industry really was, and I also gained my first experience of leading a team. I joined the MDS scheme in June 2024.

What new skills or experiences have you gained during your apprenticeship?

Two brand new experiences to me were working in a branch office of a large multinational company, as well as then working in the global headquarters of a large multinational. Both experiences helped me to pick up a huge variety of new skills, ranging from cultural awareness, cross-functional teamworking, and commercial awareness, to name but a few.

If you could describe your apprenticeship experience in one word, what would it be and why?

Unique: I truly could not think of any similar path into a career in agriculture that would offer such a varied and exciting experience. I have very much enjoyed my experience on the program so far, and I am most excited for everything more that is to come.

What Makes MDS Unique?

At MDS, we pride ourselves on offering a flexible apprenticeship model that adapts to the needs of both apprentices and employers. (Learn more about the benefits of flexi-job apprenticeships). Alongside working in up to four different job roles in industry-leading companies, Trainees study for a Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification, accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.

Behind the scenes, our People Development Team work tirelessly to provide support and create environments where Trainees can thrive. Their commitment ensures our Trainees have access to the resources and guidance needed to succeed.

MDS works closely with The Apprenticeship College, where skills coach Haley Williams-Dixon  emphasises the immense value of apprenticeships:

Apprenticeships are a valuable option for both employers and apprentices. They offer industry-relevant training that promotes talent management while nurturing both new and existing employees. Apprentices gain exposure to different work environments they may never have accessed without an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours of our future workforce. They unlock potential, shape individuals, and empower people to be the best they can be.

Through this partnership, MDS is proud to support individuals in their professional development, ensuring they gain the essential skills that not only enhance their careers but also contribute to the wider industry. With a focus on real-world experience, apprenticeships provide a unique opportunity for both employers and apprentices to grow and thrive in today’s competitive market.
