Paul Willgoss Appointed Chair of MDS

Paul Willgoss Appointed Chair of MDS

MDS is pleased to announce Paul Willgoss as its new Chair, following the planned departure of Christine Tacon, who stepped down after nine years of exceptional leadership.

During her time as Chair, Christine has overseen a period of real growth and transformation at MDS. Membership has nearly doubled, and Trainee numbers have grown from 32 to over 100 each year. She has strengthened the organisation’s reputation as a leading provider of leadership and management training in the food and fresh produce sector, all while championing diversity, resilience and talent development across the business.

Reflecting on her time at MDS, Christine said:

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve as Chair of MDS for the past nine years. The organisation’s mission to nurture and develop the future leaders of the food and farming industry has never been more important, and I am immensely proud of the increased resilience of the business, the diversity and capability of the Trainees and the strength of its membership. I am confident that Paul will bring a fresh perspective and energy to the role and that MDS will continue to go from strength to strength under his leadership.”

Paul officially took on the role in October 2025. With a 32-year career at M&S, including 17 years as Technical Director, he brings a wealth of experience in the food and farming sector. He has also held senior roles across sustainability, governance and risk management, working with businesses, government and NGOs. Most recently, he has been instrumental in leading an industry-wide approach to tackling modern slavery, working alongside John Shropshire, one of the founders of MDS, demonstrating his commitment to ethical and responsible leadership. Known for his collaborative approach and innovative thinking, Paul is perfectly placed to lead MDS into its next chapter.

On his appointment, Paul said:

“I’m truly delighted to be joining MDS, a great business which plays a crucial role in the development and support of future leaders in the food and farming industry. It is a real honour to be part of this ongoing success story as Chair.”

Paul’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for MDS. Building on Christine’s remarkable legacy, he will help the organisation continue to support and develop the next generation of leaders in the agrifood sector.
